What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic fresh water blue-green algae. It
grows naturally in the tropical lakes of Asia, Africa &
Central America and it is cultivated in Cuba. Spirulina platensis,
the most widely grown species is considered to be one of the
world’s few “super foods”. It is high in protein,
contains all the eight essential amino acids required by man
and is nature’s richest whole food source of Vitamin E, Beta
Carotene, antioxidants, Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA) and chlorophyll.
Spirel Spirulina Production
Spirel Spirulina is grown in a tropical micro-climate in Cuba.
It is grown in a controlled environment, free from pesticides
and pollutants and with record hours of sunshine. The technology
used in the production of Spirel Spirulina has been developed
and improved over many years with the assistance of some of
the world's most recognised scientists and experts in Spirulina
production. Production is in purpose built reservoirs using
spring fresh water and where continuous stirring by paddle
wheels assures perfect exposure to the intense Cuban sun.
Why Cultivate Spirulina?
Spirulina is high in protein, consistently more than 65% -
higher than any other food. Its rapid growth means it yields
over 200 times more protein per hectare than beef and even
20 times more than soya beans. It requires less water per
kilo of protein produced than other foods and when the water
is recycled, as it is with Spirel Spirulina it makes for a
very efficient system. It requires less energy input per kilo
than most other crops and fixes more carbon dioxide than any
land plant.
Quality Control
Spirel Spirulina is grown in strictly monitored reservoirs
and is harvested daily. Drying takes place in purpose built
chambers at low temperatures to ensure full nutritional value
and maximum potency. Each day’s production is given a unique
batch number. Each batch is rigorously tested for fungal and
bacterial contamination and heavy metals. Only after a safe
bill of health is received is each batch sent for packing
as Spirel Spirulina.
